The project room was the kitchen and adjoining breakfast room.

The Client wanted the walls to look like old, weathered plaster with actual 'broken' or 'worn' areas .... (Coggeshall)

HOW I DID THIS TECHNIQUE.
The color had to work with the cherry cabinets in the kitchen The first step involved painting a deep chestnut brown eggshell oil paint on the walls and allowing it to dry.
Next, I troweled on a skim coat of joint compound covering some - but not all of the chestnut brown color. At this stage I also carved 'stones' out of the fresh compound to appear as though they were a part of the wall's foundation. These stones were done in specific places where wear and tear might have naturallyoccurred through time..
The next step was to slowly paint on the six other layers of color onto the plaster - completely covering the chestnut brown base color.

At this stage I painted to 'faux stones' and the grout lines to look true to life. I added shadows beneath each stone to give a three dimensional feel..
