The next step was a bit "tricky":

I scrubbed the walls with denatured alcohol removing some of the paint, cutting down to the chestnut brown. This allowed the alternate layers of paint to tint the brown base in a soft burgundy hue - making it match the cherry cabinets better.

Beneath the kitchen cabinets I employed my secret technique of hand painting on ceramic tile.... the same area now appears to be weathered fieldstone... most of the stones are actually raised with plaster for actual relief and texture.

Trompe-l'oeil cracks were painted to add age. Moss was added in areas that it might actually grow and each stone received individual attention to make it's character unique and different.

Finally, I applied a soft rag treatment to give the wall a little movement.

The soffit over the breakfast area was made to look as it were all stone blocks and appears to have the chiseled lettering ,

'Carpe Diem' .
