The intent was to draw the viewer into the hallway with the feeling of .intrigue. Where does this lead?

The "weathered" top of the wall has the ceiling color "edged in" to the grout lines and fissures of the old stone blocks. This was done to create the effect of opening up the room, implying that the ceiling color is the sky. It brings it beyond its expected position., making the room appear bigger.
