Mural, Mural on the Wall

Two professional muralists share their secrets for creating memorable spaces with artistic renditions.

To demonstrate the stunning effect of handpainted images, Douglas and Dawn offer a behind-the-scenes look at their muraling techniques. Although you may not be the next Michelangelo, there are hints and tricks for home decorators at every level: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

Fine art can grace any wall in the home, but sometimes, the finest artistry is part of the wall itself. Murals, those work of art applied directly to walls and ceilings, can have a powerful impact on living spaces, no matter their size.

"I think art is a necessity, not just a luxury," says professional artist Douglas Coggeshall of Hinsdale, Illinois, who works up to seven days a week creating murals. "It makes you feel good and makes your house look good."

Dawn Rundle , a fellow muralist and a friend of Douglas, says that a mural lends beauty to virtually any spot.
